Alex's research focuses on setting up a new chemical vapor deposition system optimized for the growth of doped diamond for quantum applications. The system is particularly suited for growth with unexplored dopants as only a small number of cheap and easy to replace parts are contaminated during growth. The system will also be used to grow material containing color centers of known properties like the nitrogen and silicon vacancy center in diamond and Alex will work on the growth of dense ensembles of silicon vacancies for quantum memory applications and he will characterize their optical and spin properties in the quantum optics lab.
